The Dialogue has finalised the annual report on rehabilitation progress, with 2025 results showing continued progress in the rehabilitation of land disturbed by mining across the Upper Hunter. This project commenced in 2012 and has provided annual reporting on rehabilitation outcomes across the region since that time.
During the 2025 calendar year, 800 hectares of land was newly rehabilitated, representing a significant increase from the previous year and contributing to a total of 16,880 hectares of land currently under rehabilitation across the Upper Hunter. This represents a 92% increase in the area of land under rehabilitation since reporting commenced in 2012.
In 2025, 410 hectares of new land was disturbed by mining. The continued focus on progressive rehabilitation has resulted in the rehabilitation-to-disturbance ratio reaching 1.95 in 2025, nearly double the five-year average, reflecting the strong progress made in restoring previously disturbed land.
The Dialogue rehabilitation reporting project builds on the requirement that all mines in NSW report on their rehabilitation progress. Under the standard conditions for mining leases introduced in 2021, all Upper Hunter operations are required to lodge an Annual Rehabilitation Report and Forward Program with the NSW Resources Regulator to demonstrate progress towards progressive rehabilitation and sustainable post-mining land use outcomes.
