Mining Dialogue’s Steering Committee meets with Hunter-based MLC Emily Suvaal

The Upper Hunter Mining Dialogue’s Joint Advisory Steering Committee (JSAC) was joined by Cessnock-based Labor MLC Emily Suvaal MLC this week, for a briefing on the Dialogue’s key projects and initiatives.

Ms Suvaal also briefed the Committee on recent NSW Government initiatives relevant to our sector.

JASC members had an in depth and constructive discussion with Ms Suuval, with a strong focus on the issues, challenges and opportunities around economic diversification and future land use. Ms Suvaal also provided an update on progress towards the establishment of the new NSW Future Jobs and Investment Authorities and encouraged the Dialogue to play an active role once they are established.

The Dialogue secretariat provided an update on key environmental projects, notably the draft Air Quality Analysis Update for the 2023 calendar year and the rehabilitation reporting project.

Following the success of the Pasture Restoration Field Day in 2023, members discussed and supported holding further field days in areas such as mine closure, alternative post mining land uses, air quality and water stewardship.

Muswellbrook and Singleton Councils provided updates on their key economic and social development initiatives. Alongside this, Singleton and Muswellbrook Business Chambers provided an overview of their recent and/or ongoing initiatives and upcoming events.

Members also discussed a range of potential topics or presentations at the 2024 Community Forum, to be held on Wednesday 24 October.
