The Dialogue has finalised the annual report on rehabilitation progress, with 2024 results showing that industry remains committed to progressively restoring land disturbed by mining in the Upper Hunter. This project commenced in 2012 and has annually reported on rehabilitation in the Upper Hunter since.
During the 2024 calendar year, 749 hectares of land was newly rehabilitated, which is similar to the five-year average. This means that about 35% of all land disturbed by mining is now under rehabilitation.
By the end of 2024, 27,609 hectares of mining land remained disturbed, with 1,749 hectares of new land disturbed by mining in 2024 due to the continued development and expansion at some mine sites.
The Dialogue rehabilitation reporting project builds on the requirement that all mines in NSW report on their rehabilitation progress. Under new standard conditions on mining leases implemented in 2021 to ensure progressive rehabilitation and sustainable post-mining land use outcomes are achieved, all Upper Hunter operations are required to lodge an Annual Rehabilitation Report and Forward Program to the Resources Regulator.
